UPPER PLENTY HALL (THE SHACK) NEWS DECEMBER 2011

Community Day Held on 20th November

The Community Day went off well with plenty of people coming along to enjoy the various activities. We were blessed with a beautiful sunny day, quite unexpected after all the rain the previous day. There was a large turnout for the Dedication & Unveiling of the World War 2 Honour Board. Harold Hurren from the Kilmore RSL conducted the ceremony, assisted by members of the Whittlesea RSL. Cr.Kelley Stewart, former ADF member, gave the speech & unveiled the board, and the Rev. Peter Weeks from the Wallan Uniting Church said the Dedication Prayer. A wreath was laid by Mrs. Mavis Patton whose husband, brother, and brother-in-law all served. Also in attendance were George Smithwick, of Beveridge, who constructed the Board, and Lindsay Gilmour, of Whittlesea, who did the sign writing. They did a fantastic job in replicating the existing WW1 Honour Board.

See the photo’s from the community day here.

The money for the new board came from a Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Saluting Their Service commemorations grant. Many thanks to all who participated and helped to make it such a successful and enjoyable day.

The School raffle was won by Hayley Day.

Due to high demand for use of the hall the Committee of Management has instigated a deposit, payable when making a hire booking. Hire will not be confirmed until the deposit is paid.

We are still experiencing some teething problems, in particular, drainage from the concrete slab. In heavy rain water runs toward the building and sometimes seeps under the door. We hope to have this problem rectified very soon.

Our next event is the Australia Day Breakfast, always a very enjoyable event, and a good excuse to indulge in a cooked brekky. With a bit of luck we might just have Cr. Trevor Tobias to lead singing the National Anthem again.

Look out for our recently erected noticeboard, not very visible from the north approach due to trees on the car park embankment, but a great view from the south. Hopefully we will be able to get Vic Roads to remove the trees……

Until next year, then, Wishing you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas.

Rose.
