WHO IS WHERE AND WHAT ARE THEY DOING?

Shari & Andrew (Stokes Track) – welcome to Shari, Andrew & family who have recently moved to Upper Plenty. Shari & Andrew came to the Australia Day Breakfast and met a few local people while enjoying the breakfast.

Gillian & Travis Buckland (Lords Rd) – happy birthday to Gypsy who turned two on February 10. You may remember that Gillian went into labour on Black Saturday while fleeing the family home.

Glenys & Bill Broderick (Clarkes Rd) – continue to be plagued by delays and problems with rebuilding. Things ground to a halt after Christmas and have yet to resume.

Anita & China Potter (Mahadys Rd) – have started building their new home.

Chris & Gordon Ogilvie (Mahadys Rd) – enjoyed a skydiving event recently with a group of other people. The dives were “partnered” and while everyone agreed it was a fantastic experience no one said they would be doing it again.

Hayley & Gaven Day (Clarkes Rd) – spent the Christmas break with Hayley’s family in Port Douglas. Gaven had the opportunity to go to Bloomfield (between Port Douglas and Cooktown) with friends where they had great success fishing.

Hayley had some very anxious moments during the recent cyclone. Fortunately, the family were safe and suffered no property damage.

Addie & Willie Maskell (Mahadys Rd) – are well underway with re-building and are up to brick-laying.

Allan Spence & Gaven Day (both of Clarkes Rd) – went on the Special Forces Challenge Day at Hurstbridge in January and enjoyed the day. They were exposed to various situations which real soldiers experience such as sniper attack, kidnap and interrogation, and physical challenges. Not everyone’s cup of tea but they survived and thoroughly enjoyed the BBQ at the end – the experience was so real they even got army hard rations for lunch, making the BBQ a real hit, not to mention the beers.

Nicole & Eric Kanderovskis (Mahadys Rd) – are thrilled to be back in Upper Plenty and are loving their new home.

Lou Drofenik (South Mountain Rd) – Lou’s new book Cast the Long Shadow is being launched on Thursday 10th March, 7pm at Kilmore Library. RSVP required – 5782-1322.

Maxine & Don Watson (Clarkes Rd) – had a bumper crop of blueberries this year. Maxine & Don donate the proceeds to their church.

COMMUNITY NEWS

The Australia Day Breakfast was a huge success with 80 plus people in attendance. David & Francis did a fantastic job on the BBQ – thank you both. Unfortunately, our Australia Day Ambassador, Kevin Butler, was unable to attend due to his unforseen involvement in the volunteer effort to help people affected by the Queensland floods. We also were missing our soloist to lead the singing of “Advance Australia Fair”. For a while some of us were thinking the morning might be a bit of a disaster, however, we were ably assisted by Cr. Trevor Tobias who lead the singing and Cr. Kevin Mulroney who made a terrific speech. It was a very social event with lots of talk and laughter. Definitely a worthwhile annual event!

We even have some footage of the singing on our website Australia Day Event Link

Thank you Tony Wakefield, computer guru and webmaster.

Building and Renovation at the hall / Community Recovery Plan:

The tender for the building works at the Hall has been awarded and has come in at a very competitive cost. Work on the outdoor area and associated building works are expected to start March / April. Duration of building work will be approximately 16 weeks. Scheduled events could be delayed / cancelled so keep an eye on the noticeboard for any changes.

Upper Plenty Community Special Effort Raffle raised $521.00 to donate to the Queensland Flood Disaster Appeal. Thank you to all those who supported the raffle by buying tickets or donating prizes. The raffle was drawn on the 4th February at the Friday Night Community BBQ.

1st Prize – large Tupperware Pack – Jacqui Sims.

2nd Prize – made to order oilskin coat (donated by David Meek & Val Paton) – Matthew Day.

3rd Prize – Medium Tupperware Pack – Paul Brinsden.

4th Prize – Childs bicycle (Donated by Wallan Mowers & Cycles) – Tony & Sue Schneider.

5th Prize – Small Tupperware pack – Buckland Family.

Upper Plenty Primary School Fundraising Events:

1. Spring Bulbs – many varieties, mixed collections, budget packs available, will be in time for autumn planting.

2. Family portraits – great idea for Mother’s Day or just to rebuild our photo collections.

Order forms and further information about either of these activities is available from upper Plenty primary School or call Deirdre on 5783-2320 or

0438 054 192. Order forms can be mailed out. Proceeds will go to the Literacy program, including take home readers, class sets and Big Books (particularly useful in the littlies classes)

Black Saturday Commemorative Lunch:

A lunch to commemorate Black Saturday was held at the Shack on Monday February 9th. Thanks to Deirdre Payne for organising the catering (lovely food from Willara Café). For all of us it was a day of remembrance, particularly underlined by all the disasters happening elsewhere at the moment. It was hard not to think of all those people who are just starting on the long and difficult road to recovery. We can be grateful we are all well along that road now and in a position to return the support that was given at our time of need.

The saga of the Sawmill (Mahadys Rd) continues. Business appears to be operating as usual despite Mitchell Shire applying an Enforcement order. Mitchell Shire are apparently now going to the Magistrate’s Court for breach of the Order. On a brighter note, Mr. Knott’s daughter has recently become engaged.

Garbage collection at last!! – Don’t forget to put out your bins on Wednesday nights for collection on Thursday morning. Recycling is fortnightly.

JOKES:

As we “Silver Surfers” (older folk on the internet) know, sometimes we have

I had a problem yesterday, so I called Eric, the 11 year old next door, whose bedroom looks like Mission Control, and asked him to come over.

Eric clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem.

As he was walking away, I called after him, “So, what was wrong?”

He replied, “It was an ID ten T error”.

I didn’t want to appear stupid, but I nonetheless enquired, “An ID ten T error?

What’s that? In case I need to fix it again”>

Eric grinned…….”Haven’t you ever heard of an ID ten T error before?”

“No”, I replied.

“Write it down”, he said, and I think you will figure it out”.

So I wrote down:

ID10T

I used to like Eric, the little bastard.
