JUNE 2010

Hi Everyone,

This will be the last monthly issue of Stay Connected – Upper Plenty.  It will be continuing on a quarterly basis (next issue will be September).  Initial funding came from a Mitchell Shire Council Community Development Grant which has now run out.  Fortunately, we were able to access some funds through VBAF and can continue to keep you informed about what is happening in our neighbourhood.

The Upper Plenty Community Advisory Group was elected at a meeting held on Thursday May 13.  Committee  members are as follows –

Hayley Day (Treasurer)  Ph. 5783-1441 hayleyday AT conxx.com.au

Nicole Kanderovskis (Secretary)          shanimax AT hotmail.com

Rose King (Chair)        Ph. 5783-1661  roseking_55 AT hotmail.com

Alison Holmberg          Ph. 5783-1950

Deirdre Payne            dierdrempayne AT hotmail.com

Gillian Anderson          gilliananderson75 AT gmail.com

Glenys Broderick          Ph. 5783-1579

Stephen Patton          Ph. 5783 1649

Val Paton    Ph. 5783-1307 valpaton54 AT bigpond.com

Alison & Hayley will continue to represent Upper plenty at the MCRAG meetings.

Any community member is welcome to attend meetings.  Meeting days & times will be rotated to accommodate the needs of people wishing to attend.  Minutes and forthcoming dates of the meetings will be available on the Upper Plenty website www.upperplenty.com There will be a copy of the most recent Minutes on the Shack indoor noticeboard.  Contact a Committee member if you are unable to access minutes in either of these ways.

Unfortunately, Kris Faltis has resigned from Co-ordinating the monthly Community Get-Togethers.  I’m sure you will all agree she has put in a lot of hard work and done a fantastic job.  They will be continuing, but the day & time may occasionally change to incorporate a wider range of activities.  All events will be advertised in Stay Connected, on the website, and on the Shack’s outdoor noticeboard.

Some people have been asking where the money to hold Community gatherings comes from.  Initially funding came from VBAF, but now comes through various Programs offered by State & Federal Government and Philanthropic organisations.  The Community Development Officers at Mitchell Shire Council have been fantastic in assisting the Community Advisory Group with this (thank you Jo, Kelisha, Lisa, and Jacqui!). Other funds have been raised through small raffles held on the Friday nights (thank you Leanne & Kris).

The Shack Committee of Management recently heard that they had been successful in their application for a Local History Grant from the Public Record Office of Victoria.  This will allow the Committee to expand and reformat the existing history display.  It is expected this project will take quite some time, with a project completion date set at December 2013.  Meantime we will be busy collecting as much information as possible.  If anyone holds the original title to their property we would love to have a look and take a copy.  We are also interested in any photos and documents, e.g., letters, rates notices, newspaper items, account books, etc., that relate to earlier times in Upper Plenty. Contact Rose – 5783-1661 or Ross – 5783-1328.

WHO IS WHERE AND WHAT ARE THEY DOING?

Chris & Gordon Ogilvie (Mahadys Rd) – Chris & Gordon have moved into their new home in Whittlesea, though have been working very hard on their Mahadys Rd. property.  They have planted trees & bulbs and have been busy reclaiming garden beds from the jungle of weeds we have all experienced as a result of lots of rain.  Son, Rob, is enjoying his Outdoor Education Traineeship which is based at Eildon. He spends his days taking school and corporate groups out hiking, kayaking, climbing, etc. Jack is busy with work and Caitlin is doing well with her photography.  Caitlin has a website www.shotatcloserange.com where you can view her work.

Anthony & Leanne Stokes (Stoke’s Fresh Fruit) – have plans to build a new home on the west side of the Wallan-Whittlesea Rd.  Anthony is planning to use some salvaged timbers from his parents (David & Jennice) home block.  The Planning process is taking some time, however.  Brother, Matthew, is hoping to build close by.  Both have young families who would then grow up in close contact with each other – sounds great.

The Timber Mill (Mahadys Rd.) – A date for the VCAT appeal against Council’s decision to refuse Mr. Knott a Planning permit has been set for September.

Addie & Willie Maskell (Mahady’s Rd.) – Addie is still laid up with the ankle she broke several months ago.  She is managing to hobble around with a stick but is not able to return to work at Coles just yet.

Anita & Neil (China) Potter (Mahadys Rd) – are making progress with house plans.  Their house will be built by Grant Roddy, a local resident.

Dr.Lou Drofenik (South Mountain Rd) – Lou has published three novels over the last 10 years all strongly influenced by Lou’s Maltese background.  I have read all three and found them a very enjoyable read.  All three are available through the Mitchell Library Service or you can contact Lou on loudrof AT hotmail.com

Stephen & Margaret Patton (Clarkes Rd) – are planning a skiing trip to Queenstown in New Zealand with their daughter, her partner and baby.  This will be a BIG birthday celebration for Stephen.

Ross Mugavin (Mugavins Rd.) – is on two months leave from Parks Victoria and is working hard around the property.  Don’t forget to take a real holiday Ross.

Julie & Alf Maffei (Whittlesea-Wallan Rd) – Julie has recently spent time in hospital due to ill health.  Best wishes for your recovery Julie.

No. 265 Clarkes Rd – subdivided from Glenys & Bill Broderick’s property a few years ago, the owners have had the arborists in to do some removal of hazardous trees, prior to building a new home.

Glenys & Bill Broderick (Clarkes Rd) – have started building their new home. Clarkes & Mahady’s Rds. are very busy at the moment with a lot of trucks & tradies’ vehicles coming & going.

Sandra Lackas (South Mountain Rd) – watch out for Sandra in the next series of City Homicide (Channel 7). She plays a regular small part as a policewoman.
