APRIL, 2010

Hi Everyone,

Mural Painting on the Hall toilets & water tank has started and will be completed soon.  Over the school holidays, Kris Faltis, who is co-ordinating the project, got together with a group of local children & their parents to clean & seal the tank and toilets – a very time-consuming job.  The hard work has been done now and very soon we will be seeing some fabulous murals.  The mural painting has been designed by Kris and funded by a Community & Recreation Grant from Mitchell Shire Council.

The Hall Annual general Meeting to elect the Committee of Management was held on March 17th.  The Committee of Management has remained the same with Stephen Patton as President, Rose King as Secretary, David Meek as Treasurer, and Susan Bott for Bookings /Hire.

Do you have dead trees you would like taken down? I recently spoke to Graeme Hughes from the Arboriculture Program at NMIT part of whose job is to supervise students felling trees.  Graeme & his students will be taking some trees down on my property late April and early May.  He would be happy to do this for other people and could look at your site when he is in the area.  He is looking at quantity (up to 100 for a day’s work) but will not do trees where assets may be at risk (eg., structures, fences), and will fell only.  It would be your job to clean up and remove though the students will cut trees into manageable lengths.  Bill & Glenys Broderick have a contact who may be able to help with removal for milling.

If you are interested you can phone Graeme on 0419 551 146 or email graemeh-hrt@nmit.vic.edu.au .

A BIG THANK YOU to Alison Holmberg & Hayley Day for putting on their chefs’ hats for the last Recovery Meeting (see last page for more info on meetings) and cooking all the pasta for the Pizza & Pasta Night.  The pasta was delicious, ladies, so please do it again sometime.  Alison & Hayley saved the “BBQ Fund” $160.00 by doing the catering themselves.  Well done both of you.

Also A BIG THANK YOU to Kris Faltis who talked to the Easter Bunny about Easter eggs for the children.

Rose.

WHO IS WHERE & WHAT ARE THEY DOING?

Residents of Clarkes Road recently noticed the absence on the road of “The Black Bullet”, aka Charlie Patton. Some of us wondered if Charlie had finally misjudged the distance between himself and a passing car. But no, Charlie needed to be hospitalised for surgery on an abscess caused by an embedded grass seed. Hope Charlie has made a speedy recovery and the vet’s bill won’t be regretted by his owners….

Margaret & Chris (Sticks ‘n’ Stones) – will become grandparents for the first time in September this year.  Congratulations!  Their son Michael has been in hospital after breaking his foot in a motorbike accident. Margaret & Chris are still waiting on a decision from their insurance company even though they have now completed a retaining wall to divert water in case of another flood / storm.  The insurance company has told them that they will not reinsure them.

Happy Birthday Henry Snowden for March 30th and to Claudia Snowden for 26th April.

Vince & Teresa Carlin (Clarkes Rd) have some unwelcome house guests recently.  Vince set a new grey lightweight mousetrap and, BINGO, overnight caught the little rodent. In the morning Vince put the mouse trap outside intending to dispose of it, when all of a sudden a magpie swooped down and flew off with the mouse, trap still attached.  Vince has had to go shopping for a new trap and won’t be making that mistake again!.

Teresa also mentioned that a few weeks ago, after the storm, there were council workers in Clarkes Rd.  The speed restrictions at each end of the area they were working on said “Caution 70kms“.  Teresa stopped and said she was confused about their speed limit as the advisory sign for Clarkes Rd. indicates 50kms.  The worker Teresa spoke to said, “Oh, is it?”.  Teresa is not sure if the speed limit was adjusted.  This is a reminder to us all that we mustn’t assume that council & other workers always get it right!  A friendly reminder can help!

Rose & Francis (Clarkes Rd) – would like to thank the person who removed the Portaloo from our creek.  We hope it was worth the effort and you get a lot of use out of it. We are very grateful to you, whoever you are!

Rita & Keith Millar (Clarkes Rd) – the slab for the new house has been laid & they are now waiting for the frame.  Natalie & Royce have been back for a while now living on the property in their relocatable.

Alison & Robert Holmberg (Clarkes Rd.) – now have their shed up and find it has made a huge difference to their lifestyle.  The kids, especially, are having a lot of fun scooting around the large concrete floor for hours on their scooters.

Upper Plenty Primary School – has had some very attractive landscaping completed over the Easter School holidays.  They have also had some of their play equipment moved so it can be better utilized.  Previously, the children had been unable to use the equipment because the new water tanks were not fenced.  The school & grounds are looking great.

Gillian & Travis Buckland (Lords Rd) – have bought a house in Whittlesea after having had several moves since the bushfires.  The children have continued at the Upper Plenty Primary School so Gillian will find it easier than driving from Epping twice a day.  She & Travis are in the process of building a shed on their Lords Rd. property.

Hayley Day & Matthew (Clarkes Rd) – had a great holiday in Queensland over the Easter break.  Hayley’s sister lives in Moranbah, a mining town 2 hours west of Mackay. Hayley’s parents from Port Douglas were also visiting so Hayley & Matthew had a really good catch up with family. The weather was lovely – 28 -32 degrees every day with a gentle breeze.  Coming back to Melbourne was somewhat cooler…

JOKES

Q: What do you get when you cross a chicken with a cement mixer?

A: A bricklayer.

Q: What did the mosquito say the first time he saw the camel’s humps?

A: Did I do that?

An old nun who was living in a convent next to a construction site noticed the coarse language of the workers and decided to spend some time with them to correct their ways.

She decided she would take her lunch, sit with the workers & talk with them.

She put her sandwich in a brown paper bag and walked over to the spot where the men were eating. She walked up to the group and with a big smile said: “And do you men know Jesus Christ?” They shook their heads & looked at each other very confused.

One of the workers looked up to the steelworks and yelled out, “Anybody up there knows Jesus Christ?”

One of the workers yelled down, “Why?”

The worker yelled back, “Cos his wife’s here with his lunch.

Two snakes were sliding through the grass when one snake said to the other, “Are we poisonous?”

“No, why?”

“I just bit my tongue”.
